Pursuit of environmental sustainability has become a consensus of human society, and is considered an imperative for every business to achieve their long-term goals. At WuXi Biologics, we take innovative actions to address climate change and optimize our environmental management system, aiming to continue to greening our business and influencing the wider value chain.


Environmental Targets

Climate Change and Energy Saving
  • – Near-Term Targets: Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 58.8% by 2034 from a 2024 base year; reduce scope 3 GHG emissions covering purchased goods and services 63.8% per kg of product produced within the same timeframe
Water Management
  • – Reduce water consumption intensity by 30% by 2025 from the base year 2019
  • – Implement Water Excellence Stewardship (WES)* on our priority sites by 2027
Climate Change and Energy Saving
  • – Overall Net-Zero Target: Reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050
Waste Management
  • – Reduce waste intensity, including hazardous and non-hazardous waste by 10% (tonnes/RMB10,000) by 2027 from the base year 2022

Climate Change and
Energy Saving

WuXi Biologics stands firmly committed to decreasing our energy use and reducing emissions. In addition, we shoulder the responsibility to minimize our carbon footprint and build business resilience against climate change.

 

In 2025, the Company’s GHG emission reduction targets were validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), advancing its pathway toward net-zero emissions.

 

  • Governance

    Governance of climate-related issues is incorporated into our comprehensive ESG structure to ensure that climate change is considered equally with other material ESG issues in our strategy-making process.

     

  • Strategy

    The Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) guides our understanding of risks and opportunities that may arise from climate change, and we developed our Climate Change Policy accordingly.

     

  • Risk Management

    We are working both internally and externally to minimize and mitigate identified material climate risks. The process for identifying, assessing, and managing climate-related risks are essential elements of our current risk management system, which is aligned with the COSO Enterprise Risk Management Framework – Aligning with Strategy and Performance.

  • Performance

    By the end of 2025, the company achieved a 30% decrease in Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emission intensity compared with the base year 2020. The percentage of green electricity usage increased to 14% globally.

Environmental
Management

We have a reliable, effective, and responsible Environmental Management System that was developed according to the latest ISO 14001 standard, covering all countries and regions where we operate.

 

Our EHS Policy and EHS Standards provide the guiding principles for environmental management, including for key issues such as air management, water and wastewater management, waste management.

    We have developed specific internal policies and auditing procedures on waste management and discharge control for further compliance.

     

    • Waste Management

      We strictly supervise the collection, classification, storage, and transfer of different kinds of waste to prevent environmental pollution and maintain compliance.

       

    • Water Discharge Management

      We strictly abide by laws, regulations, and standards of wastewater treatment in all countries and regions where we operate.

       

    • Air Emission Management

      We are aware that the management of soot, NOx and other air emissions is also important to our operations and to the environment. We require all of our facilities to take necessary management steps to ensure environmental protection.

       

  • Resource Management

    We are committed to reducing our footprint on the planet through efficient, circular use of water and packaging materials to ensure responsible production and disposal.

     

    • Water Resource Management

      With 2019 as the base year, the company aimed to reduce water consumption intensity by 30% by 2025, and by the conclusion of 2025, it had fully achieved this ambitious goal. This reaffirmed our dedication to good water stewardship — a determination to improve our water efficiency performance and minimize our reliance and impact on water resources — and become a driver of our commitment to implementing Water Excellence Stewardship (WES) at our priority sites by 2027.

       

      WES covers multiple important topics including Water Governance, Water Balance, Water Quality, and Safe Drinking-Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), WES particulars reference the GB/T 38966 Assessment Requirements for Water Stewardship, the AWS International Water Stewardship Standard, and other industry standards. By the end of 2025, the WES program had been rolled out at 10 of the company’s global sites.

       

    • Packaging Optimization

      Following 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), we consider the impact of our products on the environment through all stages of their lifecycles, from development and production to use and final disposal.
