Parenteral Formulation: Deciding When to Go Frozen or Freeze-Dried

Many injectable products can be stored and transported in liquid form at room temperature. However, some products, particularly those based on biologic drug substances, require low-temperature storage. When refrigeration is insufficient, two alternatives are available: keeping the products frozen or freeze-drying (lyophilizing) them into a powdered form. Each form has its own advantages and disadvantages, and various factors must be considered when deciding between the two options.

 

In a recent Pharmaceutical Technology article, Dr. Jeremy Guo, senior vice president and head of drug-product development and clinical drug-product manufacturing at WuXi Biologics, articulates his expert insights into the scientific, economic, and practical factors that should be considered when choosing between freezing and lyophilization.
