Revitalized Microbial Systems Enable Development and Manufacturing of Innovative Biologics

Microbial expression systems (e.g., Escherichia coli and yeast) are pivotal for manufacturing innovative biologics such as nanobodies, enzymes, VHHs, etc. due to their advantages in cost-saving, time-efficiency, and scalability. However, they face critical bottlenecks in process development and GMP manufacturing—such as expression instability, leaky expression, unwanted post-translational modifications (PTMs), and phage infection.

Sam Zhang, WuXi Biologics’ Vice President and  Head of Microbial and Viral Platforms (MVP), shared his insights in Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News on strategies to address these critical challenges, drawing on WuXi Biologics’ real-world cases. He also provided valuable perspectives on how to best capitalize on the growing momentum of microbial production technologies.
